Margarita Island, also popularly known as the Pearl of the Caribbean, is located in the southeastern Caribbean Sea, off the northeastern coast of Venezuela, and north of the Araya Peninsula in Sucre State. Together with the islands of Coche and Cubagua, it forms the only island state of Venezuela, called Nueva Esparta. Its capital is La Asunción, and it is subdivided.
