So, you were placed on a Psychiatric Hold?​

Whether on purpose or accident, you have expressed symptoms of a Mental Health Illness and you have been informed that you are now on a Psychiatric Hold for 24-hours or 72-hours, which may later be extended if deemed necessary. As per H.R. 193, if you are on a Psychiatric Hold, there are some more steps that should be completed within the next couple of days.

This document acts as a self following guide to answer most (but perhaps not all) questions relating to Psychiatric Holds here on New Day RP.

How did we get here?​

An individual is placed on a Psychiatric Hold by presenting themselves as a danger to themselves or others by means of a mental illness. There are many ways someone can be deemed as a danger to themselves or others by means of a mental illness, and to list them all would be impossible. The fact of the matter is, someone felt your character was expressing a mental illness and was a threat, and now you’ve been placed in one of two facilities.

Parsons and Bolingbroke State Penitentiary​

Upon being placed on your hold, you will either be placed in Parsons or Bolingbroke State Penitentiary. If you are not deemed a danger to others, you will be placed at Parsons and if you are deemed a danger to others, you will be placed at Bolingbroke State Penitentiary.

Per the law, you are considered a danger to others by having a: current arrest or warrant for violent felony charges or by acts or threats of violence against Parson's staff.

Please keep in mind Parsons is staffed with local orderlies and nurses who can help with basic needs and communication to doctors if needed. Parsons has everything that would be needed to keep a patient well-feed, dressed, and housed. Medications are behind a badge locked door, and there are often visitors or sessions happening at the facility.

Your First Next Steps​

Part of being released from a Psychiatric Hold is that an individual must go through a Psychological Evaluation. You can directly impact the speed at which your character is released from their hold by ensuring that you complete your initial evaluation in a timely manner. You will be sent a form through proper channels (LEO, Psych, DHS, etc) that will connect you to our telehealth service Yale New Haven.

This form contains OOC and IC questions for our psychologists to best address your hold and help foster higher quality RP once they are able to meet with you. This will also allow a place for you to consent to a longer hold, or explain any OOC reasons you shouldn't be held. With this telehealth evaluation, your doctors can come prepared to support you at your first appointment.

What if they want to hold me longer?​

Any holds over 72 hours must be agreed upon OOC. This is done via the telehealth evaluation. However, keep in mind that if your character continues to act in a way that would justify being held 5150, they may be placed in a hold again.​

What if I disagree with the hold?​

There are in character ways to appeal the hold. We would suggest contacting a lawyer to discuss the multiple options you have to appeal the hold. A lawyer is provided, free of cost, to anyone currently on a Psychiatric Hold.

Most questions regarding Psychiatric Holds can be answered In Character, either by a member of the Psychiatric Department or by a lawyer/Judge.
