Hailing from a conservative family that valued meaningless texts and societal rules over human experience and emotion meant that Rory was always the "black sheep" of the family. Her father valued religion heavily, and her mother followed suit as to not disrupt the status quo of the house. At an early age, Rory latched onto music as an escape from the daily repetitiveness that was life. She was banging on pots and pans like a drum set as a toddler, belting Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey in kindergarten, and received her first guitar from her uncle at age 7. From that point, Rory was completely enamored with everything music, and knew that was her calling in life.
Throughout her childhood and teenage years, she developed her talents more and more, but also kept getting distracted and infatuated with new shiny things. Her parents tried to encourage her to pursue her talents in the name of religion, by playing in the church band. However Rory finally worked up the courage at age 15 to stop attending with her parents. She officially came out as queer, and continued studying music through high school, learning a tiny bit about every instrument she could get her hands on. Rory earned the title of "jack of all trades" based on her indecisiveness to stick to a single instrument. This has lead to her being able to pick up almost anything and play simple songs, but technicality is not her strong suit.
Just before her final year of high school, Rory's father fell ill and ended up passing away from a myriad of medical issues. Both her and her mother saw it coming, and had plenty of time to prepare. However, Rory's dad was the only thing really holding them together. Rory fought with her mom constantly, and even had a physical altercation at one point when she was 12. They never talked to each other, and Rory knew her father had also been unhappy in the marriage. But the constant pressure from the church kept them together. Rory filed for emancipation at 17, however learned she didn't really need to as she would be turning 18 before the paperwork ever got processed. From that point on she couch surfed with friends, sometimes living in her car to finish high school. Her mother moved out of state and ceased contact, per Rory's request.
As a senior, Rory continued burying herself in music in every way she could - marching band, orchestra, choir, jazz band - and she also heavily studied music theory. It was one of the few things that just clicked. It made sense, like a native language. Rory ended up scoring extremely high on her theory tests, and got accepted to a number of music schools across the country to continue her studies. However, rather than attending university and pursuing her degree in Music Production, Rory opted to travel and take in music as a bystander. She went to countless festivals, concerts, jamborees, and anything that sounded fun. She packed her life in her car and began following some of her favorite bands across the country, either sneaking into venues or volunteering to work barricade security for those juicy front row spots.
During a large festival, Rory found a vendor tent that belonged to a luthier from the southeast. He specialized in vintage electric restorations, however could do almost anything that involved a guitar. The older man, David, had a bit of a crusty attitude, but Rory clicked with his younger apprentice Novak. The two bonded over the topic of music, with him teaching Rory a bunch of fun facts about electric guitars. At the end of the festival, Novak and David continued on their festival tour, and Rory decided to tag along. The trio gradually made their way out west, with Novak selling product and teaching different musicians their secrets. Rory studied the old man's techniques and began showing interest in the acoustic side of luthiering. After almost a year of festivals, fairs, and every other expo under the sun, David decided it was time for him to return home. Novak and Rory had made tons of connections on the west coast though, and had no intentions of leaving. Novak had also adopted Rory into his circle like an older brother, something she had never had before. They became like family.
Rory ended up making roots in Los Santos, scoring a few design gigs to get started. She put together a portfolio of everything she's done, and ended up being hired on as a designer at
Original Clothing. Fashion was a different beast than she had been used to, but Rory was up for the challenge. She also ended up being hired on at KOKORO as a graphic designer. Novak had returned east to help David restore the workshop and return to operating standard, but after a few months also made his way to Los Santos. Eventually Rory was able to get
Serenade Supply Co off the ground, and since then the two have been making waves in the musician space of San Andreas,
